The Significance of NAIDOC Week Originating from early Aboriginal rights movements in the 20th century, NAIDOC Week is an annual national celebration held in the first week of July, recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  It provides an important opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures, celebrate the world’s oldest continuing culture, and engage in conversations about justice, truth telling and reconciliation.   The 2026 theme, “50 Years of Deadly”, marks a major milestone, celebrating five decades of NAIDOC Week and the strength, resilience and pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. “Deadly” is a positive term used by many First Nations communities to mean excellent, strong and proud.
