The Australian National Imams Council, as the highest Islamic and religious authority in Australia, together with its member Imams and religious leaders, unequivocally condemns ISIS as an evil, dangerous terrorist organisation whose actions and ideology stand in complete opposition to the teachings of Islam and the values upheld by Muslims worldwide. This position has been clear and consistent by ANIC since the very emergence of ISIS and has been maintained without hesitation ever since.
The Muslim world has suffered firsthand at the hands of ISIS, with the overwhelming majority of its victims being Muslims. Communities across the Middle East, Africa, and beyond have endured mass killings, displacement, and the destruction of places of worship, including mosques.
ISIS does not represent Islam or the Muslim world in any way. Its ideology is evil and rooted in violence and terror. It bears no relationship to Islamic teachings, ethics, or scholarship, which emphasise the sanctity of life, justice, and mercy.
ANIC and its member Imams have been clear, consistent, and vocal in opposing ISIS and its followers. In 2017, ISIS publicly listed ANIC’s senior members as targets to be killed. This was part of ISIS’s campaign of intimidation at the height of its activity and acts of terror.
ANIC, together with Muslim leaders and scholars globally, firmly rejects the use of the term “Islamic State”. We call on all authorities, political leaders, and media agencies to refrain from using this label and to refer to the group only as ISIS or Daesh. This terrorist organisation does not deserve any association with Islam in name or description.
We also reject any attempt to connect ISIS or its members to Islam or to frame its evil and dangerous ideology as a distorted version of the Islamic faith.
All reputable and prominent Islamic institutions, scholars, and Muftis across the Muslim world have openly, repeatedly, and unequivocally condemned and denounced ISIS and its ideology. This includes leading global Islamic authorities such as Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Muslim World League, the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah (Egypt), Majelis Ulama Indonesia, the Council of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia, and the European Council for Fatwa and Research, among many others. There is no legitimacy, credibility, or scholarly support for ISIS within mainstream Islam.
Anyone connected to, supporting, or promoting ISIS ideology must be denounced and held accountable. There can be no tolerance for the justification, glorification, or revival of an ideology built on violence and terror.

Recent developments involving the arrest of seven Melbourne men, who were later released without charge following a dramatic police operation in Liverpool, have raised serious concerns. The men have since reported racism in the conduct of the arrest.
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is deeply concerned about the approach taken during this operation. Footage circulating publicly appears to show the men handcuffed on the ground, with vehicles rammed, and searched extensively, before the men were released without charge.
We are particularly mindful of the heightened sensitivities following the Bondi terror attack and the importance of maintaining community harmony, calm, and public safety during this period.
These actions raise serious concerns and legitimate questions about proportionality, conduct, and potential racial profiling, and greater clarity is essential.
ANIC has been in regular contact with NSW Police and continues to seek clear explanations regarding the circumstances of the arrests and the outcome of the investigation.

ANIC Condemns White-Supremacist Hate Crime Against Victorian Imam and His Wife
The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) condemns in the strongest possible terms the vicious and religiously motivated assault on an Imam and his wife on the evening of Saturday, 10th January 2026. This cowardly attack is a disturbing reminder of the escalating danger facing visibly Muslim Australians.
At approximately 7:30pm on the South Gippsland Highway toward Dandenong, the Imam and his wife were targeted after the assailants identified them as Muslim, triggering an outpouring of anti-Muslim hatred, racial abuse and violence. The attackers boxed in their vehicle, hurled objects at their car, drove dangerously to intimidate them, then exited their vehicle to assault the Imam and threaten his wife with stabbing. The Imam was punched in the face, and his vehicle was damaged while bystanders intervened to stop further harm.
We believe Victoria Police are treating the incident as a hate crime. The offenders, described as men of Anglo white appearance with distinctive tattoos, exhibited behaviour and language consistent with white-supremacist and extremist hate ideology, a pattern increasingly seen in Islamophobic attacks across Australia.
The psychological trauma suffered by the victims is severe. No family in Australia should fear being attacked simply for their faith, appearance, or identity.
This attack comes despite Victoria formally recognising 15th March as the United Nations International Day to Combat Islamophobia. Yet research by the Scanlon Foundation continues to show that anti-Muslim hatred is the most prevalent form of religious discrimination in Australia, underscoring that symbolic recognition must be matched with real enforcement, accountability and media responsibility.
ANIC also warns that political rhetoric and irresponsible media commentary are actively fuelling this violence, particularly the dangerous false equivalence being drawn between peaceful pro-Palestinian advocacy and the Bondi terror attacks. This framing has contributed directly to a surge in Islamophobic abuse, threats and physical assaults, both online and in our streets.
ANIC’s Action Against Islamophobia (AAI) initiative is supporting the victims and monitoring this case closely, along with the Board of Imams Victoria’s Countering Islamophobia Project.
We call for urgent identification, arrest and prosecution of those responsible, and for stronger national action to confront Islamophobia, far-right extremism and hate-fuelled violence in Australia.
All Australians deserve to feel safe going about their daily lives without fear of being abused, threatened or attacked.
